As the authoritative source for voyagers of all types who want to know more about their boats, their gear and the techniques to make them better voyagers, Ocean Navigator magazine is a valued partner with the 2023 Transpac race. The skill sets needed to prepare and sail a long oceanic race like the Transpacific Yacht Club’s biennial 2225-mile race to Honolulu from Los Angeles are described and discussed in Ocean Navigator, and serve to inspire a wide range of the readership, whether they too plan to cross oceans or make coastwise passages.
Regular topics covered in the magazine include Offshore Sailing, Navigation, Weather, Marine Technology and Power Voyaging, Cruising Skills, Boat and Gear news and Marine Industry news.
Ocean Navigator has even published two recent articles related to Transpac: an informative piece on getting new racers ready for the race (https://oceannavigator.com/transpac-2023-new-racers-get-ready). Steve Ernest is racing his first Transpac on his J/145 AIMANT DE FILLE (roughly translated to “chick magnet” in English), with his son Oliver on his team, and looks forward to the challenge ahead.

Michael Marion is also a first-time skipper on his Transpac entry INSOUMISE, a Dufour 525, and while he admits “Frankly, I am the least experienced open water sailor,” he is very confident in his boat and the collective experience assembled on his team. “INSOUMISE is worthy to cross oceans,” he says, “and I am prepared physically and mentally for this challenge!”
Another Transpac-related article published by Ocean Navigator is by Editor Tim Queeney on the process of boat inspections that are required for all entries in the race (https://oceannavigator.com/boat-inspections-for-transpac-race). Tim talks with TPYC chief inspector Kerry Deaver on the rules and requirements, the equipment, and what’s expected of an entry to convince Deaver and her team they are ready to take on the Transpac.

As Queeney explains, inspectors not only have the racers’ best interests at heart, but also that most of them have sailed in recent runnings of the race and many, like Deaver, are racing in this edition as well.
“We’re all in this together,” Deaver said.
