There is a strong connection between Transpac and Whittier Trust, now in its third year as the Heritage Sponsor in this year’s 52nd edition of the race. This connection is not only based on shared principles of planning and managing risks for beneficial outcomes, something inherent to all ocean racers. As the oldest, private multi-family office headquartered on the West Coast, more than 500 families place their trust in Whittier to do the same: be prepared to navigate the wide range of uncertainties we face in current circumstances that require a steady hand at the helm and sound judgment.
Transpac’s relationship with Whittier is also deeply personal: In 1923 Max Whittier entered his family’s 107-foot war surplus yawl Poinsettia in that year’s race (shown above). It was not easy: Old, worn-out sails failed when the wind blew hard, and they had no engine when the wind quit. Still, the Whittier family continued their commitment to the sport.
For example, Whittier Trust’s CEO David Dahl and sons Michael and Sean, along with Whittier staff member Brett Scott, completed the race in 2021 on board the Andrews 77-foot Compadres, a follow up to some Whittier team members completing the race in 2019. In 2021, the team was doing well as an entry in Division 1 when things went awry midway in the race.
Michael put a positive spin on this, even with having limited expertise offshore—until that day. “This was an outstanding experience,” he said. “Everything was going great, we thought this was going to be an easy race. Then the pin in the vang broke and it went downhill from there. I had not realized how one failure can lead to others so easily.”
Nonetheless, the team persevered and finished the race under jury rig. Michael, Sean and David shared a watch, and in these tough circumstances found they got along well on board. “Maybe better than on shore” admitted Michael.
This example of the sort of teamwork and dedication to handling difficult circumstances exemplifies Whittier’s dedication towards asset management: Planning for the best outcome but being ready to shift gears when circumstances change.
As they have done for their clients for over 100 years, Whittier Trust is proud to perpetuate the legacy of those racing in the Transpac. Whittier recognizes the substantial effort and commitment it takes to finish this race. They are enthused to return as the Heritage Sponsor to continue the legacy of all Transpac participants from many generations.
For this reason, the Transpac and Whittier Trust continue to be the perfect fit.
