All at Sea! Transpac 2025 Competitors are all Underway

TRANSPAC 2025: THIRD AND FINAL STARTERS DEPART LA FOR DIAMOND HEAD

Largest boats with the longest waterlines already burning up the miles to Hawaii.

The 20 biggest, fastest boats racing in the 2025 Transpac began their offshore sprint from Los Angeles, California, to Honolulu, Hawaii, today. Ranging in length from 51 to 88 feet, these boats are competing in four divisions and also aiming to win the race’s two most prestigious prizes. The Barn Door Trophy honors the boat with the fastest elapsed time across the 2,225 nautical mile racecourse, while the King Kalakaua Trophy is awarded to the team that posts the fastest corrected time using the Offshore Racing Rule handicap system. 

Today’s start was the third and final of the 2025 Transpac’s three pursuit-style send-offs, held on July 1, July 3 and July 5. The biennial race is organized by the Transpacific Yacht Club and is considered one of the world’s greatest offshore events.

Alli talks sail changes, navigation predictions — and peanut butter pretzels. Then, we hear from Ava Wilson, crew aboard the 68ft Gunboat, Convexity², as she prepares for her Saturday start.

The Chase Builds: Transpac’s Middle Fleet Sets Off for Diamond Head

The chase is on in the 53rd edition of the 2025 Transpacific Yacht Race, with 17 boats in three divisions departing Los Angeles today on their 2,225-mile journey to Honolulu. While these boats are competing within their own divisions, they are also chasing down the 16 entrants that started on Tuesday, July 1—preparing to be chased by 20 more that start on Saturday, July 5. 

Today’s starters, with longer water lines or sportier features compared to Tuesday’s starters, should enjoy faster rides to the finish line off Honolulu’s Diamond Head, but—as is always the case in ocean racing—Mother Nature has the majority share vote in determining dockside bragging rights.

And they're off! The first 16 starters in the 2025 Transpac have set sail for Hawaii. Transpac 2025 Underway: First Boats Depart LA for Hawaii

Sixteen boats hit the line for the first start of three in the 2025 Transpac. Next stop: Hawaii.

The 16 boats that crossed the starting line today in the 2025 Transpac are up against the challenge of a lifetime. As the smallest yachts in this year’s 53-strong fleet, they are about to endure the greatest number of difficult days at sea, but they also have the greatest—and longest—opportunity to enjoy the splendors of sailing across the Pacific. After all, the more time one spends at sea, the more exposure one has to its moods and its majesty.

Four divisions began racing today at 1320, local time, on the waters off of Los Angeles’s Point Fermin. Organized by the Transpacific Yacht Club, the biennial event is considered one of the world’s premier ocean races. It uses three pursuit-style starts spread over five days (July 1, 3, and 5, 2025) to help all 53 boats finish within days of each other at Honolulu’s Diamond Head. With boats ranging from 35 to 88 feet, the staggered starts favor smaller vessels first so the fleet can make landfall in Hawaii around the same time.
