If we can look back now to a milestone, classic Transpac—say 1973, introducing ultralights—and if we are able to dig into the details of other races too, it’s through the labors of one man: Jack Smock. Against the odds, Transpac has Smock’s authoritative history of the formative years.

Jack was neither a big sailor, nor a big Transpac guy. He never sailed the race. He was, however, willing to take on a major piece of work in his retirement, at the behest of a friend and, like most things Transpac, pull it off as a volunteer, never counting the hours. Smock was an advertising man. Our urban legends have it that he put Union Oil on the map as the first company to speak out about the role and responsibilities of business. Thanks to him—fact, not legend—a whole lot of 1950-60s automobiles cruised around America with little orange balls on their radio antennas. Every car used to have a radio antenna, son, and those “antenna toppers” now appear online as vintage collectibles. In the day, they provided free advertising for Union Oil stations that announced themselves full-sized.

FIRST WEEK OF ENTRIES SEES COMMITMENT TO THE 2027 TRANSPAC

“Just do it!” says Craig Reynolds, 10x veteran of the race and skipper of Bolt, one of the first boats to enter the 2027 Transpac. 

Entries are now open for the 2027 edition of the Los Angeles to Honolulu Transpacific Yacht Race. An ocean race like no other, the Transpac has been held biennially since 1906 and sends sailors on a 2,225-nautical-mile dash across the Pacific from Los Angeles to Hawaii. 

Notice of Race is Official for the 2027 Transpac; Registration Opens June 1, 2026

The Transpacific Yacht Club has published the Notice of Race for the 2027 edition of the Los Angeles to Honolulu Transpacific Yacht Race. Known as the Transpac and held biennially since 1906, this will be the 54th running of the 2,225-mile legendary ocean race.

Registration opens on June 1, 2026, for monohull and multihull yachts that meet the requirements in the NOR, including US Sailing’s Safety Equipment Requirements (SER) for ocean races—vessels must be completely self-sufficient for extended periods of time, capable of withstanding heavy storms and prepared to meet serious emergencies without the expectation of outside assistance. 

“Transpac is one of the best offshore races in the world. A race towards the tropics with trade wind sailing near the finish and a special Hawaiian Aloha welcome awaits is a sublime experience, and TPYC and all of its volunteers look to build on 120 years of experience to make this Transpac even better," said Alan Andrews, Commodore of the Transpacific Yacht Club.
